Backpack wars no more! I have spent years trying to figure out how to keep backpacks off the floor and out of my way. I have hung them on hooks, but as they got heavier and heavier the hooks eventually came out of the walls. (It could have been all the pulling and tugging too. ) I’ve given them an entire closet, which left them on the closet floor, with papers everywhere. I tried hanging backpacks on the closet doors, but then the door would open by itself. 👀
I started to think the only solution would be to buy a shelving unit, but I didn't have the space nor the budget to get one right now.
This is what I came up with instead. I put three large baskets in my dining room (now my office / homework area). I know what you’re thinking. Why have baskets? Aren’t they still on the floor? Yes, they are still on the floor, but its not the same.
1: By giving each boy their own basket, they have their own defined space for their bag. By putting them just on the floor, they’re going to get kicked around or thrown in a pile.
2: It keeps the germy bags off my carpets and tables. I’ve been in the school and I see where these backpacks go....it’s gross. (I’m kind of a germ avoiding expert.)
3: When the boys need to go in their backpack, the basket helps keep the bag upright so everything doesn’t fall out and land all over the floor.
4: The basket allows me to drop things in it they may for the next day like homework papers left behind or books.
I have been using the baskets this past week and I am so happy with the results. My house does not have bags in every corner. I can’t believe how something so simple has made such a big difference! Do you struggle with your kids tossing their stuff everywhere? What are some of your solutions?
